From the Newsletter Secretary

This is the first issue of the Newsletter that is available only on the Web. You'll find the Newsletter and additional information about SIGMAN at http://www.aaai.org/ under membership or directly at http://www.cs.umn.edu/~gini/sigman.html.
You can contribute to the newsletter by sending a short article about your projects and experiences in applying AI techniques to manufacturing. Information on conferences or workshops of interest to the SIGMAN members, announcements of books or journals, call for papers, are welcome. Pointers to other World Wide Web pages are specially welcome. Please send your material to Maria Gini, EE/CSci 4-192, 200 Union St SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455, USA or email it to gini@cs.umn.edu.

New Journal

International Journal of Design Computing (IJDC) edited by Mary Lou Maher (General Editor), James Rutherford, John Gero, Fay Sudweeks, Key Centre of Design Computing, University of Sydney.
http://www.arch.usyd.edu.au/kcdc/journal/

JDC is a refereed journal that is published on the World Wide Web. The objective of the journal is to promote research and technology transfer in design computing through the publication of interactive, multimedia journal articles within the general topic of design computing. The form of the journal is interactive in both content and readership. Journal articles are peer reviewed and have a forum for discussion for a period of six months after the article is published. Articles are published after acceptance, eliminating the long lead time for publication. The journal, including original articles plus discussions, will be archived on an annual basis by the University of Sydney Library. Annual volumes will be available as a CD.

Call for Participation

5th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Design (AID'98) Lisbon, Portugal, 20-23 July 1998.
Call for Workshop Proposals
http://www.arch.usyd.edu.au/kcdc/conferences/aid98/
On 18 and 19 July 1998, preceding the conference, it is intended to hold a number of half-day workshops. Proposals to hold workshops on topics related to the conference are being sought. The goals of a workshop are to bring together active researchers in a topic and explore some aspects of it in a workshop environment through discussion, as opposed to the conference environment, where presentations occupy the majority of the time. Workshops run for 4 hours with a half-hour break in the middle. It is expected that workshop notes will be produced. Entry to a workshop is limited to persons who have registered for the conference and who have contributed an abstract/paper to the workshop notes. Workshops to be run at AID'98 will be selected by an advisory group drawn from the conference vice-chairs.

Swiss Conference of CAD/CAM, Neuchatel, Switzerland, February 22-24, 1999.
http://iiun.unine.ch/People/abelhi/conf.html
The conference aims at providing a forum for exchange new ideas between researchers and industrial practitioners in the general area of CAD and CAM. It will present an exciting opportunity for experts to promote greater research interest and to share ideas.

Send 3 copies of papers by November 15th, 1998. Papers should be a maximum of 8 pages, and should include the title, name(s) of the author(s), affiliation, address, telephone fax and E-mail. All the submitted papers will be reviewed by international experts on the scientific program committee.

1999 IEEE International Symposium on Assembly and Task Planning (ISATP'99) --- Towards Flexible and Agile Assembly and Manufacturing --- July 21-24, 1999, Porto, Portugal.
http://www.lab.ens2m.fr/cfp_isatp99.htm

Assembly and task planning addresses issues ranging from the research of efficient assembly sequences to the detailed robot instructions that carry out the assembly sequences or other manufacturing tasks. Assembly and task planning plays a key role in the whole life of manufactured products, from their very beginning, inside the assembly lines, to their end in the dismantling process. Between, partial assembly and disassembly processes are also to be found in maintenance operations. This field has thus a very broad spectrum, with significant impact on the development of advanced manufacturing as well as concurrent engineering. Following the success of the two previous editions, held in 1995 and 1997 in the USA, this symposium will move to Europe in 1999. Considering its importance for potential industrial applications, we continue the broad theme of this symposium: "Towards Flexible and Agile Assembly and Manufacturing".
