Report of SIGMAN business meeting

The annual SIGMAN business meeting was held in Portland during the National Conference on AI. The 1996 Artificial Intelligence and Manufacturing Research Planning Workshop. held in Albuquerque on June 24-26, 1996 and chaired by Leslie Interrante has been a great success, in terms of attendance, quality of the discussion and presentations, enthusiasm of the participants, and planning documents produced by the participants. A detailed report will appear in the AI Magazine. Considering the great success of this year workshop, a decision has been made to organize another similar workshop. Due to the huge amount of work needed to make a meeting of this type successful, and due to the limited size of the SIGMAN community, the decision made is to organize the next workshop in 1998. Dana Nau is in charge of organizing it. He welcomes comments, suggestions, and volunteers. It is not too early to start working on it.

Useful Web Pages, Discussion Groups, Newsletters

Web site on Assembly Planning

Two resources are available on the Web for those interested in assembly planning. One is a directory of WWW sites that describe research in assembly planning, at http://www.sandia.gov/2121/archimedes/APing.html . The other is an assembly sequence planning bibliography, at http://www.cs.tamu.edu/research/robotics/Wolter/asp/bib.html . Logistical information such as who maintains the sites, how to contribute, etc., are available there. The intent of both sites is to retain a fairly narrow focus on assembly planning, and not include the many related areas. An electronic mailing list of the interest group in assembly modeling, design-for-assembly and automated assembly planning has been set up in reponse to one of the recommendations which came out of an industry/academia Workshop on Assembly Representation organized by Boeing Information Systems and Services in Seattle, WA, in April 1995.

Discussion Forum on Assembly

To subscribe send email to: majordomo@cme.nist.gov. Include in the body of the message: subscribe assembly (no subject, and no signature). The list includes e-mail addresses of assembly modeling, design-for-assembly and assembly planning researchers around the world. Related technical topics, for example assembly tolerances and assembly or maintenance simulation, are also within the scope of interest. Subscribers can use the list to discuss technical issues, announce new developments, give advance notice of workshops, post calls for papers, etc. One topic which is of particular interest within NIST is the further development of the STEP standard (ISO 10303) to provide enhanced facilities for the representation of assemblies.

Discussion Forum on CAD

A discussion forum and email list on the topic of distributed and network-centric computing in Computer Aided Design has been created at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (netcad@cme.nist.gov). In the interest to generating broader consensus on problems and enabling wider collaborations, we encourage those involved in R&D in this area to subscribe to the list and make it a valuable resource to the community. To subscribe send email to: majordomo@cme.nist.gov Include in the body of the message: subscribe netcad (no subject, and no signature).

The Design, Planning, and Assembly Repository

NIST has created a national electronic repository of solid models and mechanical designs. The objective is to further the state-of-the-art in academic and industrial process and assembly planning systems by building a catalog of publicly accessible real-world example parts. This repository will provide access to benchmark designs and process plans in a variety of formats to serve as reference data to aide developers in advancing and commercializing automated process planning technologies. The Repository currently contains over 2500 files with mechanical parts, maintained in multiple data file formats (STEP AP 203, ACIS .sat, DXF, IGES, DGN, Parasolid .xmt to name but a few). Contributions have been made by major research institutions (U Maryland College Park, Heriot Watt, U of Southern California, Purdue, UIUC) as well as major CAD/CAM vendors (Bentley, ICEM/CDC, Spatial Technologies, Unigraphics). Currently there is nearly 500M of information. Contributions are solicited from the industrial and academic research communities. The goal is to present a comprehensive cross-section of realistic parts and process plans. The repository is at http://www.parts.nist.gov/parts . Contact William C. Regli about contributing data or using the repository.

Books

Advances in Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, Usama M. Fayyad, Gregory Platesky-Shapiro, Padhraic Smyth, and Ramasamy Uthurusamy (eds.), AAAI Press/The MIT Press. 1996. 611 pages. $50.00. ISBN 0-262-56097-6. The book contains a collection of papers originally presented at the workshop on Knowledge Discovery in Databases held in 1994 and a set of invited survey papers. The papers are organized into the following sections: Foundations, Classification and clustering, Trend and deviation analysis, Dependency derivation, Integrated discovery systems, Next generation database systems, Applications, and two Appendices, one on terminology, the second on Internet resources for data mining and knowledge discovery. The book covers the whole spectrum of problems and issues in the field, from the process of finding and interpreting patterns from data to some details of algorithms for extracting patterns from raw data. The section on foundations outlines the state of the art and introduces a general statistical perspective and a graphical model for various data mining techniques. The section on classification and clustering presents, among other topics, developments in inductive logic programming and describes in detail Autoclass, a system for unsupervised classification that uses a Bayesian method to find the most probable set of class descriptions. Dynamic time warping is presented in the section on trend and deviation analysis as a way of finding patterns in time series data. A survey of research on learning Bayesian networks from data is described in the section on data mining, together with methods for deriving association rules from transaction data and of using contingency tables to discover different types of knowledge. The sections on integrated system and on applications cover a variety of methods and real world problems, such as classification of sky objects from images, analysis of health care data, and analysis of securities data to predict equity returns. The book fills an important need in a field that is rapidly evolving and that requires bridging between different communitites (database, machine learning, statistical methods, etc). The material presented is timely, the editors have done a great job in ensuring high quality papers and in providing well written material to cover the foundations and not just advanced research topics.

Case-Based Reasoning. Experiences, Lessons, and Future Directions, David B. Leake (ed.), AAAI Press/The MIT Press. 1996. 420 pages. $40.00. ISBN 0-262-62110-X. The book contains a collection of seventeen papers on case-based reasoning. The papers cover a good variety of examples for multiple domains and tasks, including design, education, legal reasoning, planning, decision support, and software quality control. Indexing, retrieval, situation assessment, case adaptation, and evaluation are covered mostly through examples and descriptions of systems. An extensive bibliography at the end of the book includes a large amount of current and classical references. Most of the writers are well known researchers in academia. but some of the papers describe industrial applications at places such as Lockeed Martin Palo Alto Research Lab, Sony Computer Science Lab in Tokyo, and NEC Corporation. The book includes an introduction that puts case-based reasoning in context, a nice tutorial (adapted from an earlier book by Janet Kolodner), and speculations on the future of case-based reasoning and AI.

An Introduction to Genetic Algorithms, Melanie Mitchell, The MIT Press. 1996. 205 pages. $30.00. ISBN 0-262-13316-4. The book is a well written and easy to follow introduction to genetic algorithms. The book focuses on fundamental issues more than on applications, and provides a solid presentation of the major issues and theoretical foundations, together with some useful implementation notes. The book includes thought and computer exercises at the end of each chapter. The book presents mostly material on using genetic algorithms as problem solvers, but it shows also how genetic algorithms can be used as simplified scientific models that can answer questions about nature. Genetic programming is briefly covered, and so are evolving cellular automata, methods for data analysis and prediction, and using genetic algorithms to evolve neural networks. A full chapter is devote to the theoretical foundations, something very important for anyone interested in obtaining a deeper understanding of the behaviors of genetic algorithms.
